Map of Renewable Energy Worldwide
This interactive map displays Percentage of Renewable Energy Worldwide. Darker shades of purple, indicate lower renewable energy use. Green shades indicate more renewable energy use. For exact percentages of renewable and fossil energy use values, hover over the map. To take a closer look, zoom in. For more information, scroll down.
Renewable Energy Use (Percentage %)
Energy Generation
Energy can be generated from to sources:
"Renewable energy comes from unlimited, naturally replenished resources, such as the sun, tides, and wind." Energy.org
Renewable energy can be used for transportation, heating, and electricity generation.
Non-renewable energy, in contrast, comes from finite sources, such as coal, natural gas, and oil.
As you hover the map above you will find the different sources of energy in billion kWh. kWh means kilowatt-hours.
A kilowatt is a measure of power and a kilowatt-hour is a measure of energy; power is the rate at which something uses energy, and energy is the capacity to do work. Direct Energy.
Renewable Sources of Energy
Renewable sources of energy can be reasonably harvested or created within meaningful timeframes to match demand.
Using renewable energy has several advantages that include the reduction of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels, therefore reducing some types of air pollution.
Diversifying energy supply and reducing the dependence on imported fuels.
Creating local economic development and jobs in manufacturing, installation, and more. Source: EPA.
The most common uses of renewable energy include:
- Solar (photovoltaic, solar thermal)
- Wind
- Biogas (e.g., landfill gas/wastewater treatment digester gas)
- Geothermal
- Biomass
- Low-impact hydroelectricity
- Wave and tidal power
Nonrenewable Sources of Energy
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, (EIA) non-renewable resources are any resources that “do not form or replenish in a short period of time".
For example fossil fuels are formed from organic carbon material that has been heated and compressed over millions of years.
Examples of nonrenewable energy include:
