Home Size (sqare feet)

Home Size in the U.S.A.

The size of homes in the United States has long been a topic of interest, reflecting both cultural values and economic trends.

On average, American homes are among the largest in the world, with the typical new single-family home measuring around 2,200 to 2,600 square feet.

But home size can vary significantly based on location, lifestyle, and personal needs.

The home sizes displayed on this map come from Realtor.com

It includes the median size of homes sold in each county since 2016.

Everything is Bigger In...

Not everything is larger in Texas apparently. Mc Mansions are more common elsewhere.

The state with the largest home size is Utah, with an average size of 2,800 square feet, followed by Colorado and Idaho.

The counties with larger median home size are:

  1. Douglas County, Colorado: 3889 sq. ft.
  2. Morgan County, Utah: 3765 sq. ft.
  3. McCone County, Montana: 3700 sq. ft.
  4. Elbert County, Colorado: 3617 sq. ft.
  5. Williamson County, Tennessee: 3374 sq. ft.

Bigger Homes, Bigger Expectations

Over the past few decades, the average size of homes has steadily increased.

Many families value extra space for things like home offices, guest rooms, or play areas.

In suburban and rural areas, where land is more available, homes with multiple bedrooms, large kitchens, and full basements are common.

Larger homes could also mean larger incomes. Specially if you keep in mind the counties with larger homes.

Tiny Homes

The state with the smallest homes is Hawaii. Their median size is 1,164 square feet. This state is followed by New York and Iowa.

The counties with the smallest homes are:

  1. Aleutians West Census Area, Alaska: 413 sq. ft.
  2. Garfield County, Montana: 785 sq. ft.
  3. Corson County, South Dakota: 934 sq. ft.
  4. Wheeler County, Nebraska: 1024 sq. ft.
  5. North Slope Borough, Alaska: 1071 sq. ft.

I guess it is definitely easier to keep a smaller home warm than a bigger one.

Small Homes and Minimalist Living

At the same time, there’s a growing trend toward downsizing. Tiny homes—usually under 500 square feet—have gained popularity for their affordability and simplicity.

Many younger buyers and retirees are choosing smaller homes to reduce costs, lower their environmental footprint, or live more intentionally.

The Future of Home Size

As lifestyles change, especially with the rise of remote work and multi-generational living, what people need from their homes is also evolving. Whether big or small, the ideal home is one that fits the way people live today.
