"With a strongly conservative population, Madison County is one of the most staunchly Republican counties in the United States". Source: MadisonCo.
This last fact might explain a younger population. (Conservatives tend to have more kids). But don't quote me on that one.
Kusilvak or Wade Hampton, AK
There are 3 facts that might affect Kusilvak's young population.
A high percentage of Alaskan Native Population, a high unemployment rate, and that between 2000 and 2006 it had a sharp increase in Hispanic population.
Todd County, SD
Todd County is one of five South Dakota counties that lies entirely within an Indian reservation.
According to HHS the birth rate among Native American women is about 50% higher than that for all women in the U.S. between the ages of 15 and 50.
This might explain why this last 2 counties are so young.

- Loving County, Texas: 75
- Sumter County, Florida: 62
- Catron County, New Mexico: 57

Loving County, TX
Loving county has several particularities, it is the least populated county in the U.S.
It has the highest GDP per capita.
And according to this data set, it is also the county with the oldest population.
It looks like all that oil revenue was just keeping the elderly population and driving away the younger population.
Sumter County, FL
We all know Florida is the place where retirees flock to spend the last years of their lives.
The snowbird trend is still popular for Florida and other southern states. So this Florida county is not a major surprise.
What is fascinating is that in Sumter, is the largest retirement community in the USA, The Villages.
In the Villages, at least 80% of the units in a 55+ community must have at least one resident aged 55 or older.
It also has more golf courses than any other community in the world!
Catron County, NM
Catron is the largest county in New Mexico and the least populated.
In this county the Gila and the Apache National Forests meet.
Kenedy and Terrell Counties, TX
These are also some of the least populated counties in the U.S.
