Home Price to Income Ratios

The home price was obtained from Zillow. It is the "Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI): A measure of the typical home value and market changes across a given region and housing type. It reflects the typical value for homes in the 35th to 65th percentile range" Zillow.

The Median Household Income was obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau.

To calculate the Home Price to income Ratio, the home price was divided by the household income in each county (ZHVI/Household Income).

Some low population counties have no home price. They have no ratio value or it is equal to 0. These areas have the brightest green.

Low Home Price to Income Ratios

As observed by the map home ownership is more likely to happen in the Midwest, Great Lakes, Mid-Lands and the South of the United States.

Besides the areas that have no ZHVI and the ratios are 0, there are several counties that have very affordable home prices.

Tillman County, OK

The ratio in this area is less than 1. The median income is about $44,000, and the house price is under $44,000!

Tillman County produces cotton, wheat, alfalfa, milo, peanuts, gaur, Sudan, soybeans, vegetables, and melons.

Harper County, OK

In Harper County, home prices are about $59,000 and household income is around $58,000.

According to Data USA homeownership rate was 82.8%.

Barber County, KS

Barber County homes are worth about $58,000, while the median household income is $56,000.

According to the U.S. Census 81.3% of homes are owner occupied.

High Home Price to Income Ratios

As seen on the map, are Western states, Mountain states, and the Pacific coast have the least affordable homes.

Other affordable counties include Clark, Ruch and Osborne County in Kansas.

The home price to income ratio is 18. The median home price is over $2 million while the median income is $110,000.

Nantucket is an island known for its natural beauty and 82 miles of beaches.

Nantucket was designated a National Historic Landmark District, because it is a late 18th- and early 19th-century example of New England architecture.

The area is sought after as a luxury vacation destination.

Pitkin County, CO

Pitkin county has one of the highest incomes in the United States. Still, the ratio at Pitkin county is of 17. The median home price in this area is $1.7 million.

Pitkin is surrounded by the gorgeous Rocky Mountains.

Pitkin County is a popular tourist destination with world-class ski resorts.

New York, NY

New York City is a major global center for finance, media, and arts, attracting a large population and driving up demand for housing. At the same time Manhattan is an island with limited space, which drive housing costs high.

Teton County, WY

Teton County, Wyoming contains all of Grand Teton National Park and 40.4% of Yellowstone National Park.

Its natural beauty drive the interest of local and foreign home buyers.
