American Golf Courses

I made this map to explore where are most of the Golf Courses in the United States.

This map displays over 7000 golf courses and clubs.

Most of the them are in the state of Florida.

This is because the Sunshine State has a warm weather is pretty flat and wet and easy for gated communities to have their own golf courses.

Besides the state has a large number of visitors that can come each year to relax in its resorts and hotels.

Retirees also love the sport as it is pretty much injury free. Since Florida is a favorite for snow birds, it is just logical for it to florish.

Florida has about 1250 Golf Courses throughout the state.

Florida is closely followed by California and Texas. California has 968 courses while Texas has 861. Source Golf365.

History of Golf

Golf began in Scottland where players would hit pebble around sand dunes with a bent stick.

The game gained more popularity when King James IV of Scotland became the first golfing Monarch.

The game spread throughout Europe when King Charles I brought it to England, and Mary Queen of Scots introduced it in France.

The Gentlemen Golfers of Leith formed the first club in 1744.

As the British Empire expanded so did the reach of Golf.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) was established to regulate the game in 1894. By 1900 there were more than 1000 golf clubs around the country. Source: History UK.
